I worked with a compensation team member to find out the goal of their analysis. The original request from the client was to provide a data dump for them to 'sift through and figure it out'. That did not sit well with me. I asked probing questions and worked with the client to determine specifically what business question they were trying to answer and what action(s) hey were planning to take. Armed with this information I began making suggestions on how a visual with filters could be designed to deliver the insights the client was looking for.
Instead of spending time on sifting through and transforming data, the client was able to skip right to insights via making selections of predefined filters on key fields. The resulting output was displayed in a stacked column matrix report chart and accompanying table to allow for easy comparison of the two groups that were being analyzed.
